The Colorado Avalanche signed 22-year-old center Paul Stastny to a five-year contract extension through the 2013-2014 season.

A second-round draft pick in 2005, Stastny scored 78 points in 2006-07, finishing second to Evgeni Malkin for the Calder Trophy honoring the league’s top rookie. That year, he set an NHL rookie record by scoring points in 20 straight games.

Last season, Stastny led the Avalanche with 71 points in 66 games and was selected to play in his first All-Star Game.

St. Louis center Andy McDonald will miss a minimum of six weeks after breaking his left ankle during a 3-2 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.

Blues coach Andy Murray said Monday that McDonald fractured the small bone in his left ankle after going awkwardly into the corner boards late in the first period.

MRI results revealed no further damage and surgery is not required.
